Horses as Animal Companions

Cavalier
A medium Cavalier seeking to acquire a horse mount gains access to a young Courser or Destier, which begins play using the stat block of the Palfrey or Rouncy, respectively. This mount is also trained in the purpose of combat, per the Handle Animal skill rules. Upon reaching 4th level, the young horse receives a +2 to Str and a +2 to Con as indicated in the Animal Companion rules – this ability score increase will mature the horse to reflect the stat block of a Courser or Destier, as appropriate.

Druid
A medium Druid seeking to acquire a horse animal companion gains access to a young Courser or Destier, which begins play using the stat block of the Palfrey or Rouncy, respectively. Upon reaching 4th level, the young horse receives a +2 to Str and a +2 to Con as indicated in the Animal Companion rules – this ability score increase will mature the horse to reflect the stat block of a Courser or Destier, as appropriate. In addition, the horse becomes trained in the general purpose of the Druid’s choice.

Paladin
Upon reaching 5th level, a medium Paladin seeking to acquire a horse as a divine mount can select a Courser or Destier. Unlike the Cavalier and Druid, this horse is fully mature due to the +2 Str and +2 Con bonus it receives at 4th level. In addition, the Paladin’s mount also gains an Int of +4, making it capable of performing all tricks and removing the Docile (Ex) trait.
